Holmburry ride...

The area around Holmburry Hill may very well be part of the Bermuda Triangle. More specifically, Peaslake. Every time I try to get there to ride, I end up in a warren of tracks, circling around whilst trying to map read and stay out of the hedges... Maybe its all part of a Government conspiracy to keep the numbers down before the the introduction of a MTB based stealth tax, like in Hong Kong?

After various alcoholic assaults the night before, from the Pompey FA cup pubs, to me getting involved in a whiskey and tequila 'tasting' session at Ant's birthday BBQ, it was amazing that we all showed up on time at a rammed Peaslake car park, ready to ride!

Starting off, we hit the classic Y-Pots - it was dry, rooty and great fun, blasting the cobwebs away and getting thoroughly stuck in. After some faff and Daryl producing printed out directions, we got lost and saw some new trails, Yanis hemeraged tools and Daryl kicked a rock, before finding our way over to the reservoir and BKB. This produced huge grins all round as the pace was fast and super engaging. I had a little root induced trip to the floor, but it was all good and we hiked straight back up to run the whole shebang again.

After the hike and a quick stop for refreshments, we hit the same loop and took some photos. We took the route down Telegraph Road after Y-P and almost ran smack into some weirdy beardy who refused to get off the trail even when presented with five bikers at speed. All his friends had stepped politely off the trail to let us through but he obviously owned that stretch. Daryl was ready to fight.

Anyway. A few new trails at the bottom of T-R for me and then back to run BKB and take some of the photos. Really good day out. Some of the most bizare driving was witnessed on the way out, but again, I think that was a government social experiment...

PS. Daryl has bought all sorts of new things for his bike at mated rates and refuses to share the love. What a scumbag!

Dorset-Bank Holiday Camping

Howdy, a bit late this post but I now have photos as well...

Gem, me (Daryl), Steve and Gemma all zinged our way down to Langton Matravers again on the Friday for a spot of camping and climbing-complete with Steve's fabulous new invention-the pizza oven in a barbecue! After setting up and having a bit of food and a fire we retired fairly early on Friday to set oursleves up for Sat. Saturday morning saw the arrival of Chrissi, Gareth, Dan, Michelle and we all set off for Winspit. With 4 of us climbing and the other 4 favouring the walk to a pub approach to extreme sports. Steve and I had a good crack at quite a few routes and the wrist didn't seem to slow me up at all. We started with a 6a which I toproped-beautiful! We then did a couple of 5's another 6a, also tried a 6a+ by the name of Rampant Love Jugs and then I rounded the day out with a nice tall climb back in the main quarry-complete with loose block on the final crux...

We met the others back at the pub who certainly seemed to be enjoying the cider-especially gareth! We then retreated to camp to meet up with Sophie and George. Had a game of French cricket with some youngsters-who Gareth educated with some colourful language. Sterling effort there son...

We then repeated the whole fire, drinking, talking rubbish (especially Gareth) process again and the headed down to Headbury the next morning for some more climbing where we tackled a grade 1-TASTY..Gem and george flew up this and then the grade 2/3 next to it before rain stopped play for lunch. The rain seemed to be set in so we abandoned the climbing in favour of another fire back at camp and a chance to really test out the pizza oven-which created some of the best tasting pizza ever. Good effort on that creation Steve, and watch this space for future developments of the barby...........

Woburn. My back Yard.

Thats right, my very underused back yard. Its all a bit fragmented and you can never rely on the state of any of the building, but it is what it is and good for session-ing.

Shore

We started off with a warm up xc type ride thingy which got the blood pumping and sweat drenching as it was absolutely boiling! Nice to ride fast, dry trails at maximum pace on spec and good driftability. After a favorite blast through the yellow gauze and the bloodied forearms that that entails, we started sessioning the jumps and little down hill runs... V good fun it was too and I had a look at a medium sized gap/step down thing but decided against it before witnessing a guy absolutely monster the big road gap. awesome. We hit the hip jump which I hadn't ridden before and it was really smooth. Did some filming and advanced the trick bag with Chris's no footers and my small one handers. All good.
Bad shot below but it kinda illustrates.

Back home for BBQ, beer and relaxing. Good luck Chris and Kate on their Chalet meeting, today!

Updates

Been very quiet on the posting front as all sorts of busyness has kept me/us from doing the things we like to do and share... I have found a sweet local spot where a mate of mine rides his trials bike (motorbike) and I intend to start building some stuff there, so I will keep you posted. I have entered into next year's London Marathon (Suppress laughter, now) with Ant, Gav and Daryl although its a bit of a lottery, but training will commence with fury next week, honest. We have done some more work on the house and have almost finished (pics may follow), the cat is bigger and all are looking forward to the Alps trip in Aug.

I did the exhausting Made in Brunel shoot over the weekend and it was top, nice work, guys, I intend to attend this year.

Daryl and crew went to the south coast climbing/camping so I'D LIKE TO SEE THE PICTURES OF WHAT I MISSED. Sorry, didn't realise about the caps there - too lazy to change. Afan is on the horizon, too. Will get on it.

Japan Snowboarding

This was ages ago now, but at Easter myself and a few friends went on a splendid jolly to Japan for 10 days. While we were there, Jono and myself managed to nip off to the Japanese Alps near Nagano (home of the 1998 Winter Olympics) for a couple of days of extreme sports. It was good, but my ribs still hurt a bit.

Riding!... At last.

Weather always throws something unpleasant at you in the UK and more often than not, best laid plans are knackered. Daryl and I had planned to climb some sport routes this Sunday in the start of a beautiful sport climbing partnership that'll see us dismissing 7cs before you can say, "chinny chin chin". But no. Metcheck informed us of persistent if light rain and rash DIY decisions were made to go riding in Bracknell, which also meant that Gareth could come too. Bonus!

So 10 rolls round and were there, in the overflow carpark, mocking the Gorrick contenders (as fools for being so fit) and having fun with the parking, all ready to go and smash Daryl's newly mended wrist. Thing was, this was a day for the unexpected. It didn't rain, Daryl didn't smash his wrist, Gareth rode with a noticeable improvement and I was absolutely crap! Awesome!

Also, sorry for taking so long to post these I have been a busy boy. I have now also done my back in laying three floors in a day, at work. Thanks. But still managed to get some new kitchen bits in with the help of Gavin. Nice one mate.

Click on the pics and the videos of just how crap I am are on Flickr, too.

Tea and Tapestry...

Thats right. It appears that you cant have craft without coffee in the lakes in the same measure that you cant pitch a tent without a howling gale arriving...

Dave:

As it was a long weekend, I somehow managed to negotiate some time away from the impending arrival/fitting of our new kitchen and other pressing DIY chores to escape with Daryl, Gemma and Rich off up to the Lakes for some camping and walking orientated fun. This was a VERY last minute trip and planning was therefor reduced to a minimal. We set off on Friday morning after cheekily leaving my car parked in someone's road (sorry, I wasn't paying £24 to park it for three days) and promptly got stuck for an hour on the M40 as there had been a major pile up. This gave us time to sort a route out and after what seemed like an age in the car, shopping and pitching our tents at Wasdale Head National Trust campsite, we were shouldering bags and heading up the bridal way towards Great Gable, with a four hour window of light! As conditions dictated, we decided to thread the Needle rather than attempt to get to the top of Great Gable, which was fine as it served as a good reccy for climbing the Needle later in the year.

Gem:
After a night awake worrying if the tents would still be standing (well, for the boys - I slept like a baby!) we set off on a loop to include Pillar, Red Pike and Yewbarrow with a few other bits along the way.

The start was a slow slog in weather that was blazing hot and sunny one minute and freezing wind the next. At the approach to Pillar we took the High Level Traverse around the north face. The ground was icy and covered in snow so the initial scramble took some time (sorry guys!), and by the time we reached Robinson's Cairn it was snowing the strangest snow (I've since discovered it is called Graupel or soft hail) and visibility was poor for a few moments. We found the path and carried on round Pillar Rock until we reached a 5ft section impassable due to verglass. Upon turning back we decided our best approach to reach the top was a snow-covered scree slope. It was hard work and very, very scary at times and the story of what ensued can only be explained in person. Upon reaching the top of Pillar we abandoned the rest of the loop and took the easy route back down to the Wasdale Head where whiskey and many pints were needed!

The following morning the weather was nice enough to allow us to pack up in the dry, before the long drive back to reality. Many lessons were learned this weekend such as crampons and ice axes would be pretty useful for winter mountaineering, always carry rope, and don't pioneer your own routes in snowy weather!

Climbing in Shef

I just noticed that these shots never got posted, but after my car un-coiled itself in the Lakes, we managed a climb at The Works bouldering place, which was great fun and although I can't remember this, judging by the photos it was snowing inside, too!

swinger

is it a bird, is it a plane, no its Rich
This is the right way up!

it is off the ground...really

if only gav could get off the ground!

Cake was eaten, drops were conquered!!!

Hectic old us. We've all been up against it recently, and with Finter's broken hand stopping him from coming out to play, I haven't been spending as much time driving round the M25 to go riding as I'd like!

The planets aligned and Chris, Adam and I found ourselves at one of the Leith Hill carparks with a whole day of riding stretching out in front of us, no rain and little visible sign of any hangovers! I hadn't seen Adam's 'new' S-works Enduro and it looked a nice beast, whilst mine started complaining the second I started pedaling - think I knocked the mech in the car...

Train

Adam_1

So, off we trotted and did some familiar warm up routes, all feeling a bit out of shape and surprised at the number of large (10+) groups riding around together. We stopped to take a quick picture at the jump spot where Daryl nearly hit a tree and witnessed the most remarkable recovery from certain death, I think I've ever seen. A chap came riping through in a train of riders and completely lost both his pedals on take off, recovering the best Finter no-foot ever. After this, we headed to one of the many drops at Leith and one that I've not done before but watched others do from the side lines. Its a scary beast to look at from on top as the transition is very small and the height drop is probably 6-8 foot depending on how fast you ride it. Chris rolled it and Adam showed led the way with a nice drop. Bearing in mind I haven't been on my bike pretty much at all since December, I felt pretty nervous and had that annoying thing where you can't seem to set your pedals up nicely. But as fate would have it, another group of riders showed up and personal pride threw me off at far faster a speed than necessary. I think I almost went to the flat, but I couldn't tell as my eyes had involuntarily shut themselves! That felt good! Drop pictured below...

After that, a few more trails led us to an area I'd not been to, with another big drop - this time, Adam's nemesis - and some jumps which Adam dispensed nicely, as did Chris - I'd done my scared bit for the day... Then back up to the tower and some cake, whilst watching the weather close in down the hill. A calp of thunder sealed the deal and it was time to go, via a pint of ale and discussion of the finer points of bacon curing at The Plough in Coldharbour.

Hardcore Hiking Ninja Playboys

Last Saturday 3 mates and myself completed the 50km Green Power Hike. The trail runs the length of Hong Kong island, from The Peak to Big Wave Bay in a ziggy-zaggy shape. We finished in 9h52m, coming 35th out of 120 teams of four. We were very pleased with this, and there were whoops, hollers and high-fives aplenty. However we outright won the (imaginary) fancy dress competition, as sole entrants in our 1970s PE teachers garb. Next year, Power Rangers.

Hugs and kisses,

Mike
