Northumberland

Steffi and I had a few days away, camping in Northumberland and it was nice, dewy and bleak, but good fun.

We saw all the sights, likw Alnwick castle and gardens...

Hitting Trees

The 'elmet cam is dying... Sad but true. This is some recent footage of local gold at Aspley woods. Tame trails, but good fun. The 'elmet is currently jammed into wide mode with a small twig and the focus is shot, so I will be on the scowl for a hot ebay deal on a 3chip replacement and a POV1.5 helmet rig. Literally, watch this space as Jon and I intend to 'get on it' over the late autumn and film/push some boundries!

Welsh Weekender - Brechfa and Afan!

WOOOOOAAAAAH. It was dry, it was hot and we were in Wales... What gives?! Not only that, but we also had, for once, been damn organised!

DAV_0031
Damn, we look cool...

Well, this trip ran by the rule book. Rule one - Get your works van. Rule 2 - Modify in one hour with a palette. Rule three - meet off the M4 in a seedy bit of countryside, at 10pm, transfer bikes and kit and then ditch a car in an unsuspecting road! Rule four - arrive in Wales, damn late, park anywhere (preferably in the middle of a strange wood where an owl keeps you awake as you've left the van door open because you brought a -10c down bag and your running with sweat). Rule 5 - ride your guts out at two trail centres!

DAV_0010

After a fitfull owl filled sleep, we were up at the crack and making a civilized breakfast, before heading round the corner to the start of the Brecfa Raven black route. We had intended to ride out the red run first and get a mammoth day in, but there was a sign saying it was closed for repair (apparently just resurfacing some of the fire road!), so we thought we'd just enjoy the black.

DAV_0013

I was especially looking forward to this as I've been wanting to ride here ever since seeing Adam's vids of the table top run...

Its a nice sized loop of 17km or there abouts and has the feeling of being 'surfaced' in a lot of parts, but reading on the internet, this is just the under soil when the top soil is removed. It had been dry for a while and it was great to ride in dusty (!) and fast conditions in Wales!

shaley surface can be sharp...

After te first climbs we were getting into it and the day ran beautifully. The trail isn't as demanding as you'd think for a black and I'd really have to say that it doesn't push you much - certainly Daryl felt that some of the other northern centres he'd been to were more challenging and it has none of the seat of the pants Alpine style feel.

Having said that, there are some epic bits that just flow sooo nicely and felt amazing to ride flat out on your first run through. Some corking sections which really allowed you to work your bike and carry speed nicely and some tech forest bits that kept you wide eyed and concentrating. More props to the Trek as it is such a fast trail bike and was loving it!

DSCF0617

The highlight was definitely the table top run which we sessioned with a nice chap for about an hour. Once you worked out which the big ones and nicely lipped ones were, you could stop landing to flat and carry a nice rythem throug. It must be said, that these photos don't do our sesh justice as (with the exception of Martyn) and it was much nicer to train doing whips and tweaks!

So after an epic day, we drove off to the relative comfort of the Glyncorrwg trail center at Afan forest park for Sunday's action. After pitching up and having quite seriously the biggest piece of cheese on toast imaginable, we cooked, settled into a beer and enjoyed how easy the van was making our lives!

After a quick breccy, we were off and climbing - always a shock to a fry-up filled system. Now for some reason, I put Daryl to shame all day, climbing and descending. He blamed my new bike, I just think Itzy's tired him out...

we decided to run Whytes Level with the down hill bit thrown in and after what seemed a very quick climb, found ourselves at the top and ready to go.

The black bit is good fun and we stopped off to take a few pics amidst just enjoying it. The scenery is wicked here and I'd kind of forgotten about it, but you do get some nice views in and out of the wooded sections.

Unfortunately the camera decide that new batteries would only last one and a half days and packed it in after this last pic, so we just had to get on and ride it instead of faffing! Which we did.

The early start meant we got away quickly and we were both eating dinner at 7pm in Pompey and MK! Can't wait to do some Scottish ones next!!! Viva la Van!

The Gap....

With the lifts closed all the routes are closed to everyone except people with understanding girlfriends/drivers and friends with vans!! Robin, Jamie and Craig had already beaten the gap jump the previous weekend and were telling me it was fine, despite the fact that when we got up there it still looked as frickin' big as it did when the lifts were open.

Anyway my first attempt at putting some footage together using Adobe Premier shows the results, still shots on the way from Jacquie which will probably be far superior to my first filming attempts.....anyway. enjoy

Last days of summer...

Ohhh no how depressing! Well it was the bank holiday and I did finally manage to get out and ride for once even if original plans went ary...

Jon and I managed to find a new local trail which I'm sure we will document shortly and then on Monday, hooked up with Rob in the Bunting strewn Peaslake for a last summer blast.

DSCF0520

It was really dry and hot and we ended up doing a massive loop with various sessions at opportune spots...

DSCF0516

We also found some new bits and enjoyed it all...

DSCF0529
This was the drop down that it took me ages to do with Chris and Adam. Its not so bad, but quite vertical!

DSCF0533

We seesioned a few jumps, ate cake, had tea and went to the pub too! All before witnessing possibly the radest jazz band in someones front garden in P-lake. Seriously, one dude was playing an electric bass, sat down and smoking a pipe. Awesome.

One of the better shots of me riding, cheers Jon. Need to work on the table tops...

Climb it like you stole it

Me and Daryl popped up to the crag 5mins from our apartment for a quick looky lou before his transfer. Really can't wait to get up here, plenty of space for a BBQ down the bottom while we try and kill ourselves!!

10 Mins outside of Morzine is the Rochers De La Chaux in Bas Thex. We've not had a chnace to climb there yet with the summer lifts being open it's all been biking and walking so far so we headed up to reccy the crag for the inter season when the lifts are shut.

DSC_0172 (Large)

Routes through the trees, difficult to see the bolts on these photos but all the routes are incredibly well protected with bolts every 3-4m. Our adventure weeks next summer will definately be including several days climbing here. There are over 90 routes, most of them grade 4-5 with multi-pitch routes and some via-feratta. This makes it well within any intermediate climber to have an excellent 3-4 days climbing on a wide variety of routes.

DSC_0180 (Large)

All the routes are clearly marked and really well protected. It's hard to get over just how many different routes there are.

Ride it like you stole it

Daryls been out for a long weekend, it's been uber dry for a couple of weeks so the trails were super quick, anyway, picture worth a thousand words............

There aren't all that many places in the world you can ride trails like this, Alpine riding at it's absolute best.

Sliding through the steep stuff!

The good news is the Champery cable car is open to well into October and being a fair bit fitter after a summer of riding, getting to the top on pedal power alone should be doddle, or not!

This bit didn't make it into the MS post due to Daryls foul mouth!!

Bormes Excursions

Steffi and I recently went south to see her mum and dad, have a break and flop around getting burnt by the sun, lounge in bars, people watching on the beach and drinking cocktails in the pool. Hard life. I should point out that she is still out there whilst I languish here, cat meowing incessantly at me to let me know she hates me for putting her in prison, whilst visibly loosing my hard earned tan...

Whilst away, I did do some active things. I went on several rides on the sweet Marin Hawk Hill that resides sleepily in Jerry's garage. Its a light, 8 speed, xc orientated mid range 90s rad machine with Gilla RST forks producing an joint shattering 60mm of travel or thereabouts and is truely quick on the road!

IMG_1946

Its quite hilly down on the Riviera and has some large, awesome areas of forest which I don't know how legal it is to ride in and are stuffed with goats, snakes and wild boar. Excellent! At certain times of the year they are also stuffed with frenchmen, with guns, shooting all this animal bounty. Beware!

I often sit on the beach at St Claire, cooking, and scan along the line of the hills behind the beach and think 'I want to go round them'. So I did.

However, I took a bit of a different slant and turned it into a kind of cyclo cross training event! Rode on the road from the house and along the coast, then climbed up a hundred meters or so on roads before picking up a very vertical trekking path. at this point the bike was shouldered or rolled out in front of me as I sweated my way up the next 35o meters!

And sweat...

cliff.

After about forty minutes of grunting, sweating and being scratched by vicious thorny bushes, whilst trying not to think about the fact that this was prime snake country, I summited. Then promptly discovered a cliff by arriving on top of it! I then did an off road traverse before picking up a corniche road back for a few miles and along to a descent route. The amazing views were only paralleled in exhilaration by the sheer terror of riding the very xc shaped frame of the Hawk Hill down this route, which was steep and gullied and I felt continuously like I was headed over the long stem, whilst the RSTs did very little to pretend that they were suspension forks. Any review of these forks, no matter how bad, will be too glowing in my opinion.

Strangely though, by the end of two weeks and several rides, I was loving that setup and was hanging it out on the downs, whilst it was an absolute Trojan on my 14km climb later in the week.

We also had a day diving! Excellent it was and I'll do a post on it later on, but here is a quite devastatingly bad photograph of me in a diving suit to keep your excitement at bay...

This does nothing for my figure. However, even Gav would look fat in one of these Beuchat rigs.
